Sir John William (Will) Ashton (1881-1963), artist and gallery director, was one of Australia's most prolific landscape painters. Winner of the Wynn Prize in 1908, 1930 and 1939. Founding member of the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board from 1918, and its chairman from 1953 to 1962; Director of the National Art Gallery of NSW 1937-1944, and the David Jones' Art Gallery 1944-1947.
